Fleet 19 News: March 25, 2008
We had a great turn out for the
impromptu meeting last Wed night with about 12-15 people showing up. To
keep everyone updated, here are some notes from what we discussed and the
respective action items.
1. Class Officers:
The below people volunteered for the following fleet management/class
officer positions.
District Gov. & Fleet 19 Captain: Brad
Julian
Treasurer: Jeff Todd
Social Chair: Dave Robinson with
support from Joe McCorkel
Webmaster: Keith Fraser
Measurer: Todd Hiller (Dave Hammet has
also expressed interest to become a measurer)
Unless any other
volunteers, nominations or objections are received from members of the
general fleet by Friday March 28th by phone or e-mail the volounteers
above will be considered confirmed for the 2008 season. So please let us
know.
2. Dues Management
Arrangements will be made to transfer
the fleet's financial account from Gunnar Goode and Ray Wolf to Jeff Todd
and Brad Julian. We understand the current balance is approximately $1200.
Once the account has been re-established, Jeff Todd will make arrangements
to begin collecting dues again from the fleet. The current balance and
future balances are going to be primarily used for fleet social events,
awards, clinics (fuel), communications and any other general fleet related
activities.
3. Web site and fleet
communications
* Keith Fraser will continue to
run the fleet web site - if you have suggestions to improve it or would
like to have content posted please send Keith an e-mail at
alltackle@aol.com.
* It was noted that we can always
improve on our communication to the fleet. Hence we are looking for more
efficient and cost effective ways to keep up to date fleet contact lists
for existing and new comers to easily join and communicate with each
other. Ideas have included using products like yahoo groups or google
groups which we will look into that can get linked to our fleet webiste.
If anyone has suggestions or
ideas on this please send an e-mail to Kieth (alltackle@aol.com)
and myself (bjulian@kpalum.com).
* It was also suggested that a
section be created for "2008 Worlds Preparation" which will include
information such as check lists, links, and tips for gearing up for the up
coming worlds at the end of the summer.
If you have content ideas for this please send them
to Kieth and I.
4. Awards
It was unfortunate that during last
year's transition an end of the season fleet party or awards did not
happen. We hope to change that going forward. This year we will be aiming
to be giving out the following awards (some old some new):
* Sportsmanship Award: naturally given
by nomination to the person who makes a significant contribution and
impact toward making the sport and our fleet better. Their name will be
engraved on the perpetual half hull trophy currently hanging in the Boat
Yard Bar and Grill.
* Crusader Cup: This award is given to
the skipper with the best overall record/scores from the entire season of
local events including Thursday night races. Todd Hiller keeps records of
the scores based on posted results.
* Fleet 19 Championship Award: This is
a new award and will be given in addition to the traditional AYC & SSA
fleet champion awards at the Fleet Championships on November 1st 2008. The
idea is to have a single supper bowl like regatta to round out the end of
the season that names a overall fleet champion regardless of club
affiliation.
* Bonehead Award: This new award will
hopefully become a perpetual trophy (actual trophy still to be decided)
and is hopefully self explanatorily and given at the end of the year by
nomination to the most deserving.
5. Social Events
* In lieu of the winter party
we are planning to have a Season Kick Off Party after the first regatta on
Saturday Night April 5. We will use some of the fleet funds to
sponsor some food and a keg. Rob and Julie Martenson have generously
agreed to host at their house. Dave Robinson will be coordinating and
communicating more details shortly.
* Other social events that were
suggested and mentioned to consider throughout the season included;
(i) destination day sail with a beach
party
(ii) J World Jamboree
(iii) Casual drinks at the Boat Yard or
other venue
6. Clinics and other events to
work into the schedule
* Jeff Todd and North Sails
have kindly offered to do a Sail Trim Chalk Talk on Thursday April 17th.
Time and place are still to be determined. This will be a good
primer before the NOODS.
* Greg Fisher has also kindly offered
to host more on the water clinics as we did last year through the season.
We will be working with Greg to fit dates into his busy schedule and let
everyone know.
* There has also been some interest in
setting up casual match racing and team racing sessions in between
regattas through the season. We will also look into the possibilities of
this. If anyone is setting up any impromptu sessions like these please let
us know to get more participation.
7. Other Business
* 2009 North
Americans: Interest has been expressed to lobby the national class to
have Annapolis be selected as the venue for the 2009 North Americans. A
lot of work is needed to accomplish this including showing that we have a
highly active and well managed fleet with good social activities. Hence we
will be reaching out to people in the fleet to form a small working group
to prepare for this.
* Thursday Night Racing:
(i) A question was raised by a
fleet member (via-e-mail) about splitting the fleet into two on Thursday
nights due to the high amount of boats participating and the short
courses. The response to this was very low as the majority of sailors the
like high level of competition and participation as well as the concern
about J-Word having enough time to manage an additional start.
(ii) In recognition of the
density of boats at mark rounding it was suggested to explore the interest
of having J-World set windward and leeward gates or a windward offset
combined with a leeward gate to facilitate better rounding.
Please send me your comments on this before
we approach J-World.
* Lifting
Brackets: The question about retrofitting lifting brackets came up
again and it was mentioned that if your boat was a TPI built series, TPI
will send you a free lifting bracket retro kit. Dave Robinson, is
researching the TPI contact and we will communicate this to the fleet.
Look forward to your comments to the
above and a good 2008 season.
Regards,
Brad Julian

As mentioned earlier, the
Fleet is still looking for someone to hold the Annual Turkey Bowl Party.
This is a potluck affair, with Fleet 19 providing the refreshments. The
McChesney's have held a great party for many years - we are looking for
someone to continue the tradition this year.
2006 Results -
- Are being
tallied. Please don't forget that if you haven't paid dues, you are not
eligible for Crusader Cup (and definitely not the Sportsmanship Award).
If you haven't gotten your dues in for 2006, please send them in. We are
now accepting dues for 2007 - see the website for dues forms and where to
send.
Fleet Leadership
Haven't heard much more from
the fleet on this topic. Below is the list of nominations thus far.
Looking at the turnout for different events this year, and considering the
schedule for next year, the fleet is rapidly getting to where it needs new
and additional volunteers to keep the fleet as competitive and fun as in
the past. There is going to be plenty of room in the schedule next year
to host different fleet sponsored events, given the following conditions:
1. The fleet members want new
/ different events.
2. Different people work to
help put on these events.
