Wide Range Series
The Wide Range lure has helped break
several fishing world records. It is usable over a "wide range"
of speeds from 4-14 knots, hence the name. The larger, heavier
head gives the lure more stability at high speeds or in rougher
waters.
Of all the
designs in the comprehensive Mold Craft stable of soft head
trolling lures, one of the most consistent fish producers is the
Wide Range. The Senior Wide Range has an incredible 1742 pound
blue marlin to its credit, the 37 kilo class blue marlin of 1189
pounds, as well as plenty of lesser black and blue marlin. The
Wide Range is available in three sizes and performs in all
conditions from glassy calm to extremely rough. It really
shines, however, when there's a bit of chop on the water. The
standard Wide Range is 9
1/2"
long and would appeal to black and striped marlin, sailfish,
tuna, mahi mahi and wahoo. It tracks straight and true and also
makes a good light tackle teaser lure. The Senior Wide Range is
arguably Australia's most popular Mold Craft lure. Some 12
1/2"
in
length it is a heavyweight marlin producer without peer, but is
not so big that it won't appeal to smaller marlin or other
species as well. The Senior Wide Range in purple, black and
clear is a very popular combination in Cairns and is an
extremely realistic skipjack tuna imitation. Finally, the New
Magnum Wide range is a mammoth 17" long and is a giant blue and
black marlin special. A word of warning though: unless you're
using it as a hookless teaser, this is a lure for 130 class
tackle only!
Super Chugger Series
The Super Chugger lure has a deeply
concave head and a long, heavy, reverse tapered body. These
refinements make the lure run well in both calm and rough water
conditions. The lure can be trolled between 6-14 knots.
Chugger-style
lures are known for their versatility in a variety of sea
conditions and Mold Craft's 'Chugger' range is arguably the best
of the lot. Possessing a realistic softness that won't put an
attacking billfish off, a radically cupped face and reverse
taper means they'll hang in there from live bait speed to 14
knots, shimmer and boogie, and throw out a long contrail of
bubbles. The Super Chugger comes in two sizes – Standard and
Senior – and is also available in a luminous color scheme
for use after dark on broadbill swordfish, tuna and even sharks.
This particular lure (in pink and white) really got the game
fishing world talking back in 1992, when it produced a
stupendous 1402 pound Atlantic blue marlin off Brazil, so
there's no questioning its effectiveness.
Hooker Series
Originally developed on the famous
boat "The Hooker", the Hooker lure has proven to be one of the
most successful trolling lures ever developed. The lures are
short for better hook ups and fat and blunt for maximum water
disturbance.
One of Mold
Craft's great standbys, the Hooker, comes in three sizes and is
one of the most successful trolling lures ever developed. The
traditional-style fat, blunt head and blind holes in the face
really throw up some water and its short length doesn't get in
the way of an attacking billfish. The Senior Hooker measures 101/2"overall
and has big marlin written all over it, while the Standard
Hooker measures 8" in length and is an incredibly versatile size
for many species of game fish. It's an excellent marlin
lure both here and overseas, but don't be surprised if blue
marlin show a murderous enthusiasm for it. The Little Hooker is
a brilliant baby black marlin and sailfish lure and appeals to
yellowfin tuna, as well as mahi mahi and yellowtail kingfish. A
daisy chain of dark colored Little Hookers will keep albacore
amused for hours!

Mold Craft Soft Birds
Originally a
Japanese invention for raising deep-feeding yellowfin and bigeye
tuna to trolled surface lures, bird teasers have made the
transition to the game fishing scene with great success. They
still work on tuna, but marlin, sailfish and other game species
find them irresistible as well. Mold Craft make Soft Birds in
three sizes – small, medium and large – and these incredible
lures can be used in a variety of ways. Swum off Spreader Bars
or as a daisy chain, a flotilla of Little Birds really rips up
the ocean. The effect it has on tuna species from stripes to
albacore and yellowfin has to be seen to be believed! Of course,
marlin and sailfish find them irresistible as well, but their
use as tuna teasers is definitely an under-utilized technique.
The medium and large Soft Birds also make brilliant teasers,
either rigged singly, as a daisy chain, or mixed with Mold Craft
Squirt Squids on a spreader bar. Their fluttering, 'wave
walking' action certainly attracts the attention of predators
and while most people use them as teasers, Soft Birds are also
extremely effective lures in their own right. Mold Craft Soft
Birds can be rigged ahead of a conventional lure for added
attraction, and the all-tackle world record Atlantic blue marlin
of 1402 pounds ate a lure with a Mold Craft Senior Bird rigged
ahead of it on the leader.
